Combat Log: T1D

Boys,

This whole bedtime thing isn't working well so we are going to reboot.

We've been talking about specialization. Who is good at what and how can we use that for our strategic advantage. We talked about it for raid comp. So, what do we know?

Mom: Fails to function at 8am if still up at 5am from consecutive lows.

Anthony: Micro-manager/Detail oriented. Impatient/persistent. Intolerant/high standards. Works well off of lists! FINISHER

David: others-oriented, but not a finisher. sees the problem, but fails to completely resolve it. STARTER

Gregory: morning person; GOFOR

So what happened last night?

COMBAT LOG for 1/19/14 overnight

10pm: David was borderline - recheck at 11.

11pm: David is low. Fast carbs followed by slow carbs, rinse and repeat until 1am.

1-2am: David can sleep; I'm low.

4am: I'm 'good', but now Gregory is low.

5am: We finally get to sleep.

8am: Gregory was up on time! Watching Madagascar... talking to me constantly while I try to sleep.

11am: David and I get up.

TBD: Anthony waking up.

So, what else do we know?

First, I just don't function well on this little sleep. I'm writing this down and we'll re-read and discuss this later today to determine if this new strat is sound.

Gregory is a morning person.

David is remarkably patient, but isn't getting enough sleep.

Anthony woke up to help with 4am BGs and likes sleeping in.

Being up late will lower BGs simply because you are up late.

A T1D who has been running high will temporarily act like a T2D. As your BGs more frequently fall within target range, the insulin you are using will work more efficiently leading to lows unless the dose is altered.

Your recent clinic appointment was kinda useless because instead of solving the problem of lows that keep triggering rebound highs, you chose to up your Lantus to accommodate the rebound highs.

Strat to Discuss

I think we need to formally assign Anthony the overnight task.

The biggest concern will be to what extent he acts like a 12 yr old and makes mistakes without realizing the consequences, so this will take training and safety nets. Posting/texting BGs can provide a training period where we all adjust to new rolls.

Additionally, I think we need to reset Lantus to 0 for the evening.

Hopefully, this will lead to some morning highs for a few days and we can slowly readd Lantus again as necessary.

We'll have to adjust bedtime snacks as well.

PS. TODAY we need to do menus for the entire week and ask Grandma for a shopping trip!
